Website Homepage Design
Follow these usability recommendations:
-
The Homepage is different than all other website pages. A well-constructed homepage will project a good first impression to all website visitors. The homepage is the most important page on most websites, and gets more page views than any other page.
-
Website Homepage Access. All interior pages should have a link to the website homepage. Many users return to the homepage to begin a new task or to start a task over again. The logo on all pages should be clickable with a link to the homepage. All page should have a Home link.
-
Present all major option on the website homepage. Make sure your most important links are on the homepage. Users should not be required to drill down a menu to find important interior pages.
-
Website Homepage Purpose. The homepage should clearly state the website purpose and should be visible above the fold of the page. The homepage should have a minimum amount of text.
|
|
- Homepage panel width. Ensure that the homepage panel width are of a width that are easily recognized as panels (i.e. navigation panels, news and information panels, etc.). Ensure that the homepage fits on the page. User should not have to use horizontal scrolling.
- Create a positive first impression. Most website visitors judge the total website on the homepage. Don't get clever, just present a solid professional impression.
- Limit homepage length. If at all possible, limit homepage to one screen full of information. Important information should be placed near the top of the page. Some users take a long time to scroll down below the fold indicating a reluctance to move from the first screen. Older users are more likely to miss information that is placed below the fold.
