Website Usability Guidelines

Website User Experience

Follow these usability recommendations:

  • Standardize Task Sequences. Use the same format for all user functions across all pages.

  • Reduce users workload. Let the computer perform as many functions as possible. This allows the user to concentrate on those functions requiring human input.

  • Do not require user to remember information from place to place on a website. User can remember relatively few items of information for a relatively short period of time. The working memory capacity tends to lessen even more as people become older.

  • Minimize page download time. The best way to facilitate fast page loading is to minimize the number of bytes per page. Pages must download less than 5 seconds, less time is preferred.

  • Display data in a directly usable format. Most users will not convert information. Present information in a manner that is consistent with the standards most familiar to your target users.

  • Format information for reading or printing. Prepare pages in a format that your user is expected to use them. You may want to provide both a reading and printing format.

  • Provide feedback when user must wait. Indicate to user the time required to download a document or imagine at a given connection speed.

  • Use users' terminology. Use terminology that your user is familiar. The average user reads at a sixth grade level.

  • Do not have unsolicited windows or graphics pop-up to users. Unsolicited windows, pop-ups, and non-meaning graphics are annoying and distracting to users.
  • Increase website credibility. You can increase credibility by:

    • Provide user help file
    • Provide FAQ
    • Provide company information
    • Provide contact information
    • Ensure that website is up-to-date
    • Ensure website looks professional
