Website Usability Guidelines

Web Page Scrolling

Follow these usability recommendations:

  • Scrolling - Designers must decide early in the development process to use long page or short pages. For e-commerce websites short pages are preferred by most users. Never get the user far away from the Buy Now button. Studies reveal that users spend 13% of their time within a page scrolling.

  • No Horizontal Scrolling - Horizontal scrolling is a slow and tedious way to view a web page. Most users will move on to another website.

  • Bold Heading - To facilitate scrolling add and bold major headings. This allows the user to scroll quickly and not miss any important information.

  • Use shorter pages.- If users are looking for specific information, break up the information into smaller portions (shorter pages). This is called chucking.

  • Long Pages - Use long pages when your audience is young, Older people have difficulty with scrolling.
